Katie Lu, a prominent figure in Michigan State University's women's golf team, began her journey into the sport at a young age. Her introduction to golf was unexpected, as it was not part of her family's interests. "I first started golfing when I was 10-years-old, and it was kind of random," Lu said. Despite this late start compared to many elite players, she has made significant strides in her career.
Lu's dedication to the sport is evident in her achievements over the years. She has established herself as one of the top collegiate golfers and continues to break records at Michigan State. As a rising senior in the Broad College of Business, she recently helped lead the Spartans to the NCAA Championships. This year, she was recognized as a First Team All-Big Ten selection and led her team with a scoring average of 71.54.
Her commitment to improving her skills is also reflected in her participation in various junior golf programs and tournaments from an early age. "My dad started getting into it more with us, and we joined other junior golf programs like the first tee," Lu recalled. These experiences have prepared her well for college-level competition.
Lu attributes much of her success to the support from her coaches and teammates at MSU. "The coaches here are phenomenal," she noted. Head Coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll has been instrumental in helping Lu develop her game further. "Katie is a tireless worker," Slobodnik-Stoll remarked.
This season saw significant accomplishments for both Lu and the Spartans, including eight top-5 team finishes and individual victories for Lu at two events. Although they narrowly missed advancing to the final round of stroke play at the NCAA Championships, Lu's performance stood out as she advanced individually for the second consecutive year.
As she looks ahead to her senior year, Lu remains focused on achieving more goals alongside her teammates. "I've always dreamed and I've always worked toward goals that maybe didn't seem as reachable during the time," she expressed.
