Three Michigan State University tennis players are set to compete in the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Sophomore Ozan Baris and graduate student Ronald Hohmann III will begin singles play on Monday. Baris will also partner with junior Max Sheldon for the doubles tournament.
The duo of Baris and Sheldon, who won the ITA Fall National Championship, returns to the NCAA Championships for a second consecutive year. Meanwhile, Hohmann is making his third appearance at the NCAA Singles Championships. This marks back-to-back seasons where Baris competes in both singles and doubles brackets.
Baris, seeded eighth overall, will face Auburn's Tyler Stice in a round of 64 match on Monday at 4:30 p.m. ET. Previously, during a regular season meeting between their teams on February 24, Hohmann defeated Stice in three sets while Baris won in straight sets. Stice currently ranks No. 31 in ITA singles rankings with a record of 17-13.
Hohmann, ranked 53rd as an at-large selection, is set to compete against sixth-ranked Oliver Tarvet from San Diego at 3:30 p.m. ET. Hohmann concluded the dual season with two consecutive wins before his match was cut short due to MSU's elimination from the NCAA Tournament’s second round. Tarvet holds a season record of 24-5.
Sheldon and Baris aim for All-American status again as they open their campaign against Wake Forest's No. 2 seed duo Dhakshineswar Suresh and Holden Koons on Tuesday. The Wake Forest pair leads Division I college tennis with a record of 30-6 this season.
In last year's NCAA Championships, Baris and Sheldon defeated the top-seeded doubles team but were eliminated in the round of 16. They rebounded by winning the ITA Fall National Championship last November and reached as high as No. 1 in this season's ITA rankings; they are currently ranked No. 16 with a record of 12-5.
Hohmann is attending his first NCAA tournament since transferring to MSU after previously qualifying twice while at LSU. In his debut season with MSU, he earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors and achieved a career-high ranking of No. 11 earlier this year.
Last year marked a historic achievement for Baris as he became the first Spartan to win matches in both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships—a feat he aims to replicate this season.
All matches will be streamed live on ESPN+.
