Michigan State University's tennis team saw mixed results at the NCAA Singles Championships on Monday. Sophomore Ozan Baris advanced to the second round, while graduate student Ronald Hohmann III was eliminated in his opening match.
Baris, from Okemos, Michigan, secured his second career win at the NCAA Championships. The tournament's No. 8 seed won against Auburn's Tyler Stice, ranked 31st, with scores of 6-2 and 6-4. As the Big Ten Player of the Year, Baris is set to face either Gilles-Arnaud Bailly from Texas or Stanford's Samir Banjeree in the next round.
In addition to his singles success, Baris will join forces with junior Max Sheldon in the NCAA Doubles Championships. They are scheduled to compete against Wake Forest's Dhakshineswar Suresh and Holden Koons, who hold a national No. 2 ranking. Both matches will be available for live streaming on ESPN+.
Last year, Baris and Sheldon made headlines by defeating the top-seeded doubles team in their first-round match but were later eliminated in the round of 16. They later achieved victory at the ITA Fall National Championship and reached a peak ranking of No. 1 this season before settling at No. 16 with a record of 12-5.
Meanwhile, Hohmann faced a challenging opponent in San Diego's Oliver Tarvet, ranked sixth nationally. Hohmann lost with scores of 1-6 and 4-6, marking an end to his collegiate career. He joined Michigan State as a graduate transfer for the 2023-24 season and had participated in three NCAA Singles tournaments during his time as a Spartan.
Hailing from Oyster Bay, New York, Hohmann played most matches at either No. 1 or No. 2 positions for Michigan State this season. His efforts contributed significantly to an unprecedented team performance that earned him Second Team All-Big Ten honors and a personal best ITA ranking of No. 11.
