Michigan State University (MSU) faced a narrow defeat against Nebraska, with a 2-1 loss in the opening game of their final Big Ten Conference series. The game took place at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field after a weather delay pushed back the start time from 6:05 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Nebraska entered the match in second place in the Big Ten standings, aiming for the regular-season title, while MSU was tied for seventh and fighting for a spot in the top eight to qualify for the tournament.

The Spartans quickly took the lead with a run in their first at-bat. However, Nebraska responded with runs in the third and fourth innings. MSU's defense held strong throughout, leaving Huskers stranded on base across four consecutive innings.

"I thought it was a really well-played game by both teams. I thought our effort was outstanding tonight," said MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr.

The loss brought MSU's record to 23-26 overall and 10-12 in conference play, while Nebraska improved to 33-18 overall and 15-7 in conference games. This defeat ended MSU's streak of four consecutive wins in series openers.

Harrison Cook, a senior starter for MSU, pitched six innings with four strikeouts, allowing five hits and two runs. Sophomore Nolan Higgins relieved him in the seventh inning without conceding any runs despite allowing three hits and two walks.

"I thought Harrison Cook was as good as he's been all year, and Nolan Higgins was lights out tonight as well," Boss added.

Nebraska's Brett Sears pitched for 6.2 innings with four strikeouts and allowed one run. Earlier that day, Sears had been named one of 68 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy.

"We went against the guy that could be the pitcher of the year in our conference," Boss stated. "He threw well tonight."

Senior Spartans Jack Frank and Dillon Kark both went 2-for-4 at bat; Frank scored once while Greg Ziegler contributed an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Despite early scoring by Frank leading off with a single followed by another from Kark setting up Ziegler’s sac fly giving them an initial advantage; they couldn’t maintain it after back-to-back doubles from Nebraska tied things up during third inning ending when Frank fielded ball off wall relaying through Seymour who tagged runner out preventing further advancement beyond double keeping
