The 1978-79 Michigan State University hockey team, led by Head Coach Amo Bessone, concluded their season with an overall record of 15 wins and 21 losses. In the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), they tied for eighth place with a conference record of 12 wins and 20 losses.

Throughout the season, the team faced various opponents, including Ohio State, Denver, Minnesota, Michigan Tech, Notre Dame, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Colorado College, Northeastern, and Minnesota-Duluth. The team's performance varied significantly across these matchups.

The roster featured players such as Mark Mazzolini, Rob Curch, Paul Klasinski among others in the front row; Ken Paraskevin and Leo Lynette in the middle row; and Kurt Lanschwager and Bruce Porter in the third row. The coaching staff included Assistant Coaches Bill Sipola and Alex Terpay.

Their season highlights included victories against Ohio State on October 20th and 21st with scores of 4-1 and 5-1 respectively. Other notable performances were against Michigan Tech on February 9th and 10th where they secured wins with scores of 4-3 and 5-3.

The team also managed to defeat Michigan twice towards the end of their season on March 2nd and March 3rd with identical scores of 5-3. Despite some challenging games throughout the season resulting in losses against teams like Minnesota-Duluth on February 17th (3-5) or North Dakota on February 23rd (2-7), they ended their run on a positive note against their state rivals.
