Michigan State University will have representation at the upcoming IIHF World Championships in Czechia, with two players and one staff member joining Team USA. The event is scheduled to take place from May 10 to May 26.
Trey Augustine, a current goaltender for Michigan State, will be one of the team's two netminders. Jeff Petry, a defenseman and veteran player, will make his fourth appearance at the World Championships. Additionally, Spartan performance coach Will Morlock will serve as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for Team USA.
Augustine has just completed his freshman season with the Spartans and is known for his experience on the international stage. He was part of the Men's U20 team that won gold at the World Junior Championships in January and also contributed to the U18 squad's gold medal win last May. This marks his first participation in the senior men's world championship.
Drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in 2023, Augustine had an impressive first-year campaign. He was named Second Team All-Big Ten and was a finalist for both Big Ten Goaltender of the Year and Mike Richter Award as top goaltender nationally. He played a key role in leading MSU to significant victories and achievements this past season.
Jeff Petry has just concluded his 14th NHL season with the Detroit Red Wings. This year marks his fourth time playing in the World Championships after previous appearances in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Petry began his career at MSU from 2007-10 before making his NHL debut with Edmonton Oilers during the 2010-11 season.
Will Morlock recently finished his second season with Michigan State's program. Prior to this role, he worked extensively with GVN Performance and collaborated closely with US National Team Development Program athletes. Morlock was part of Team USA's staff during their bronze medal win at last year's World Junior Championships.
Team USA is placed in Group B for this tournament alongside France, Germany, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, and Sweden. Their preliminary round games are set to occur in Ostrava starting Friday against Sweden.
