Michigan State's baseball team faced a tough loss against Michigan in a 12-inning game on Sunday at McLane Stadium, with the Wolverines securing a 10-8 victory. This defeat prevented the Spartans from achieving their third-ever series sweep over Michigan and their first at home. However, Michigan State did win its first series over Michigan since 2016 and achieved their third consecutive Big Ten Conference weekend series win.

Assistant coach Mark Van Ameyde served as acting head coach in place of Jake Boss Jr., who was attending his son's college graduation. Van Ameyde commented on the team's performance: "Sunday's have been a bit of a challenge for us... Every game (of the series) was like a boxing match."

The Spartans had previously won three meetings this season against Michigan, including a significant 16-6 victory in March. Despite Sunday's setback, Van Ameyde emphasized the importance of winning series late in the season: "That's our third-straight series win... if you win every series, you put yourself in a good position."

Sunday's game featured several lead changes. MSU led early but UM rallied to take a short-lived lead before MSU regained it. Ultimately, Michigan tied the game in the ninth inning and secured victory with two runs in the 12th.

MSU recorded 13 hits during the game, including five extra-base hits. Seniors Jack Frank and Sam Thompson, along with junior Sam Busch, each hit home runs for MSU.

Frank went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while freshman Ryan McKay and senior Greg Ziegler also contributed offensively. On the pitching side, senior Nick Ferazzi started before handing off to several relievers throughout the game.

Michigan State will conclude its homestand against Bowling Green on May 7 before heading to Minnesota for their final regular-season road trip from May 10-12.
