Michigan State University secured a 12-8 victory over the University of Michigan in a baseball game at McLane Stadium, East Lansing. This win marked MSU's first series triumph over their rivals since 2016. The event coincided with Spartan Baseball Alumni Day, where MSU celebrated its 1954 College World Series team.
The game attracted 1,954 spectators who witnessed a high-scoring contest following Friday night's close 3-2 win by MSU. "It feels good," said MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr., highlighting the significance of winning against their rival at home.
MSU aims for a series sweep in Sunday's finale. Coach Boss acknowledged the challenge ahead: "I know they are going to be ready to play tomorrow."
The Spartans' last series win over UM was in 2016. They have now achieved four consecutive victories against UM, marking their longest streak since 2010-11.
With this win, Michigan State improved to an overall record of 21-22 and moved above .500 in Big Ten conference play for the first time this season. Meanwhile, Michigan's five-game winning streak ended with back-to-back losses.
MSU hit three home runs during Saturday's game, pulling away from an 8-8 tie in the eighth inning. Senior outfielder Jack Frank hit his eighth home run of the season, while senior outfielder Greg Ziegler added a three-run homer.
Ziegler expressed his satisfaction: "As of right now, it's one of the best moments of the season for me." Coach Boss praised Ziegler's performance after returning from injury: "Greg's been really good."
Senior reliever Aaron Mishoulam closed out the ninth inning without allowing any hits. The top five hitters in MSU's lineup accounted for most of their offensive production.
Michigan State will face Bowling Green on Tuesday following Sunday's series conclusion against Michigan.
