Michigan State University's women's soccer team secured a 2-0 victory over Wisconsin on Thursday night at DeMartin Stadium. This match marked the Spartans' first home game in two weeks and resulted in their fourth consecutive double-digit win season. Michigan State now holds a record of 10-1-5 (5-1-3 B1G), while Wisconsin's record stands at 7-4-4 (3-3-3 B1G). The victory also clinched a spot for MSU in this year's Big Ten tournament.
Head coach Jeff Hosler expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, stating, "We got the response (after last week) with the result... I'm thrilled we got the result and the shutout."
The game's goals were scored by junior defender Sofia Beerworth and sophomore midfielder Bella Najera. Beerworth also assisted Najera's goal, earning her three points for the night. Graduate goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks contributed significantly to the win with ten saves, securing her seventh clean sheet of the season.
Despite Wisconsin having a slight edge in shots, 18 to MSU's 17, and shots on goal, 10 to MSU's nine, Michigan State maintained control over corner kicks with a 3-2 advantage.
The match began with graduate forward Meg Hughes challenging Wisconsin's goalkeeper Drew Stover early on. Beerworth opened scoring for MSU in the tenth minute with her first goal as a Spartan. Following this, both teams exchanged possession and opportunities without either gaining long-term control.
In the second half, Najera extended MSU's lead with her fifth goal of the season after an assist from Beerworth. Despite several attempts from Wisconsin in the final minutes, Parks and Michigan State's defense preserved their lead.
MSU will face Northwestern next at DeMartin Stadium on Sunday, October 20th.
