Michigan State secures road victory over Central Michigan with two goals from O'Neill

Michigan State University secured a 3-1 victory against Central Michigan in Mt. Pleasant on Sunday, advancing their season record to 7-6. Senior Emma O'Neill led the Spartans with two goals.

The match remained scoreless through the first quarter until O'Neill scored for MSU at 23:01 from their seventh corner opportunity. Freshman Lilian Knorr added to the lead five minutes into the third quarter, and O'Neill scored again at 43:49, extending the lead to 3-0.

Central Michigan's Mallory Camryn prevented a shutout by scoring with just over a minute left in regulation.

Michigan State had a significant advantage with 22 shot attempts compared to Central Michigan's eight and held ten penalty corners to the Chippewas' seven.

MSU will resume Big Ten play for the rest of the season. They are scheduled to face Rutgers in New Jersey on Friday at 1 p.m., followed by a game against No. 17 Penn State on Sunday.

Emma O'Neill achieved her first multiple-goal game this season and is now tied for first in team goals alongside sophomore Bianca Pizano, both having five goals each. Lilian Knorr scored her fourth goal of the season, tying with Ellie Rutherford and Maddie Lawlor for second place in team goals. Knorr has also scored in consecutive games, including one against No. 6 Maryland on Friday.

Jillian Bonczewski recorded her second assist of the season, contributing to her current scoring line of 3-2-8. Goalkeeper Lyra Gavino made one save, marking her sixth win of the season.
