Boston College secured a 3-0 victory over Michigan State in their home opener at Munn Ice Arena on Friday night. The Eagles, ranked No. 2, scored three goals in the second period to defeat the No. 4 Spartans.
Michigan State was outshot 14-7 during the decisive second period, contributing to Boston College's overall shot advantage of 29-24. Will Vote scored twice and Oskar Jellvik added another goal for Boston College during this period. Despite being outshot 9-7 in the final frame, sophomore goalie Jacob Fowler stopped all attempts, earning his first win and shutout of the season.
Fowler made a total of 24 saves, while Michigan State's Trey Augustine recorded 26 saves. Both teams had limited power play opportunities with Boston College taking two penalties and Michigan State one; neither team capitalized on these chances.
The series will conclude on Saturday with another game scheduled for a 6 pm start.
In notable statistics, Michigan State had not been shut out since March 3, 2023, against Notre Dame during the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. Additionally, MSU's opening night saw a sellout crowd of 6,555 spectators.
The event coincided with the celebration of Munn Ice Arena's 50th anniversary, attended by members of the Spartans' original team from the facility's inaugural year in 1974-75. Shane Vansaghi celebrated his birthday as one of Division I hockey’s youngest players at age eighteen. His former teammate James Hagens from Boston College also played his first collegiate game and is noted as one of the nation's youngest players eligible for the upcoming NHL Draft.
Both teams displayed strong performances in various periods but it was Boston College that capitalized on their opportunities to secure victory.
