Michigan State tennis progresses in ITA Midwest Regionals

Michigan State University's men's tennis team continued its participation in the ITA Midwest Regionals on Saturday, progressing with notable performances in both singles and doubles matches.

The event, hosted by Michigan State, saw two of its doubles teams and three singles players advancing to subsequent rounds scheduled for Sunday. Freshman Matthew Forbes started the day by defeating Wisconsin's Collin Beduhn 6-2, 6-1, earning a spot in the quarterfinals. Junior Ozan Baris faced Mathis Debru from Illinois and won after a challenging second set, with scores of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Juniors David Saye and Aristotelis Thanos were also competing for quarterfinal positions. Thanos overcame Milos Mikovic from Illinois Chicago with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-4. However, senior Max Sheldon lost to Steiglehner of Michigan after an intense match that ended at 5-7, 7-6 (11-9), 1-6. Saye was defeated by Miyoshi from Illinois without winning a game.

In doubles play, the pairings included Baris/Thanos and Forbes/Sheldon among others. Although Baris/Thanos were eliminated after losing their match 6-8, Alazmeh/Rakhmatullayev secured two victories to reach the semifinals. They first defeated Casey/Pate with an impressive score of 8-2 and then triumphed over Klein/Berdullas from NIU with an 8-4 victory.

The duo Sheldon/Forbes succeeded against Miyoshi/Debru from Illinois at 8-6 and later won against Notre Dame's Zhang/Corsillo with a final score of 8-5.

Spectators can follow Sunday's regional action through MSUSpartans.com as the tournament continues with singles Round of 16 and quarterfinals alongside doubles semifinals.
