Michigan State University's men's tennis team had a successful day at the ITA Midwest Regional in East Lansing, Michigan. Freshman Matthew Forbes led the team by defeating Jack Anthrop of Ohio State, who is ranked ninth. This victory was a highlight among several achievements for the Spartans.
Five players from Michigan State advanced to the Round of 32 following Friday's matches. In addition to these singles victories, three doubles teams also progressed to the next round. The start time for Saturday's competition has been adjusted to 10 a.m. at the Indoor Center, with consolation matches beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Center.
In doubles play, Mitchell Sheldon and David Saye faced Franca and Savic from Illinois Chicago, securing an 8-7 [7-3] win before losing to Thompson and Magimay with a score of 3-8. Another pair, Danial Rakhmatullayev and Taym Alazmeh, won against Komolpisut and Mackey from Notre Dame 8-1 and then defeated Casey and Pate of Northwestern 8-2 in their second match.
Juniors Ozan Baris and Aristotelis Thanos, along with Max Sheldon and Matthew Forbes, also competed in doubles matches later in the day. Baris and Thanos won against Moriarty and Kajzer from Western Michigan with an 8-1 scoreline. Meanwhile, Forbes and Sheldon beat Scarlett and Valencia from Illinois State 8-2.
Singles matches followed shortly after these victories. Ozan Baris triumphed over Nad from Notre Dame with scores of 6-2, 6-3. Senior Josh Portnoy lost his match against Goli from Northwestern (4-6, 3-6). Forbes' notable victory over Anthrop came with set scores of 6-4 each.
David Saye overcame Iker Arrastia from Northern Illinois with scores of 7-6 [8-6], 6-4 while Max Sheldon defeated Lincoln Battle of Cleveland State (6-4, 6-4). Despite a challenging start in singles play, Aristotelis Thanos rallied back to defeat Steams from Ohio State (3-6, 7-6 [8-6], 6-2). Taym Alazmeh was defeated by Komopisut from Toledo (4-6, 2-6), while Danial Rakhmatullayev narrowly lost to Nikita Filin of Ohio State University (5-7, 6-2, 5-7).
