Michigan State men's soccer faced a narrow defeat against Maryland, ranked No. 12/7, with a final score of 2-1 on Saturday night at Ludwig Field. The match was significant as both teams vied for the top position in the Big Ten Conference standings.

MSU head coach Damon Rensing remarked on the game's quality, saying, "I thought this was a helluva college soccer game," and praised his team's performance in challenging conditions. He acknowledged Maryland's strong play and expressed pride in his team's effort over a demanding schedule.

The Spartans' current record stands at 4-5-2 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play, accumulating nine points. Meanwhile, Maryland improved to 6-1-4 overall and holds 13 points in conference standings.

Sophomore defender Will Eby scored for Michigan State by heading in a corner kick from junior defender Jeremy Sharp during the 59th minute. Maryland equalized in the 73rd minute and secured victory ten minutes later.

Redshirt-junior goalkeeper Zac Kelly played a key role for MSU's defense, making three saves amidst consistent pressure from Maryland. The Terrapins had an advantage with 13 shots compared to MSU's seven; however, both teams had five shots on goal each.

Early action saw Michigan State dominate initially with two opportunities from junior forward Jake Spadafora. Despite increased pressure from Maryland later on, Kelly kept the match goalless into halftime with crucial saves.

The second half began with heightened pressure from UMD but Kelly continued to defend effectively until Colin Griffith's goal tied the match at one apiece. Sean Kerrigan attempted to reclaim MSU's lead but was thwarted by Maryland keeper Laurin Mack. Sadam Masereka eventually scored for UMD in the closing stages of the game.

The physical nature of the match resulted in numerous fouls and five cards issued before concluding. Michigan State is set to face Wisconsin next Friday at DeMartin Stadium.
