Michigan State Athletics prepares for a busy week across multiple sports

Michigan State Athletics is gearing up for a busy week from October 2 to October 8, with various teams set to compete in multiple sports.

The men's and women's basketball teams will commence their 2024-25 season with Michigan State Madness on Friday, October 4. The event at Breslin Center begins at 6 p.m., featuring player autographs and coach photos, followed by team introductions, skills contests, and scrimmages starting at 7 p.m. Admission and parking are free.

In women's soccer, the No. 5 ranked Michigan State team will face off against Michigan on Saturday night at DeMartin Stadium. The Spartans aim to regain their winning momentum after two draws last week.

The football team has a challenging schedule as they travel to face No. 6 Oregon on Friday night in Eugene. This game marks the fourth meeting between the Spartans and Ducks since 2014 but the first as conference opponents.

The cross country teams will participate in the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, on October 4. This marks their first competition since September 13.

Michigan State's ice hockey team opens its season against Lake Superior State on Friday and Saturday. Ranked No. 4 nationally, this is their highest ranking since November 2007.

Men's soccer is coming off victories against UCLA and Northwestern as they prepare to visit No. 12 Maryland on Saturday. Junior midfielder Jonathan Stout leads the team's scoring efforts.

The men's golf team heads to Notre Dame for the Fighting Irish Classic from October 6-7 after competing in the Windon Memorial Classic near Chicago.

Volleyball continues its Big Ten road games with matches against Indiana on Friday and No.10 Purdue on Sunday; the latter will be televised nationally on Big Ten Network.

Field hockey concludes a series of non-conference games with a home match against Kent State on Sunday. Coach Helen Knull brings her experience as an alumna of Kent State into this matchup.

Lastly, members of the men's tennis program continue their participation in this week's M15 Ann Arbor tournament, including senior Josh Portnoy who enters main draw action today.
