Michigan State secured a notable 1-0 victory against No. 15 UCLA in men's soccer on Friday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. This marked the first meeting between the Spartans and the Bruins, as well as Michigan State's first road win of the season.
The win brought Michigan State's record to 3-4-2 overall and 2-1-0 in Big Ten play. UCLA's record now stands at 4-3-3 for the season and 1-2-1 in league action.
The game's only goal came early, with Michigan State scoring within the first two minutes. Freshman forward Mohamed Saad’s shot was initially saved, but junior midfielder Jonathan Stout managed to score with a diving header that UCLA goalkeeper Wyatt Nelson could not reach. This goal extended Stout's scoring streak to three games, giving him four goals for the season.
In the 21st minute, Saad nearly added another goal for Michigan State when his second shot hit the crossbar.
At halftime, Michigan State led 1-0 and had outshot UCLA 5-4. The Bruins intensified their efforts in the second half, recording three shots within six minutes and a total of eleven shots in the first thirteen minutes of the half. However, Michigan State’s defense remained solid.
Michigan State’s first shot of the second half came in the 71st minute from junior forward Jake Spadafora, which was saved by Nelson.
Overall, UCLA out-shot Michigan State 16-5 and had nine corner kicks compared to Michigan State's two. Redshirt-junior goalkeeper Zac Kelly achieved his third clean sheet of the season.
Michigan State will next face Northwestern at home on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. ET. The game is set to be televised on the Big Ten Network.
