Michigan State University lost 3-0 to the University of Michigan in a field hockey match on Monday at Ralph Young Field in East Lansing, Michigan.
The No. 9 Wolverines (6-1) opened the scoring midway through the first quarter. Eva Bernardy's restart was tipped by Abby Tamer inside the circle for her eighth goal of the season. Bernardy then doubled Michigan's lead with a goal at 22:22 on a corner play. The insert was crisp to Lora Clarke, who set up Bernardy for her first goal of her Michigan career, giving the Wolverines a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Ashley Herbert made her Spartan debut in the second half, replacing Lyra Gavino as goalkeeper. Seven minutes into her debut, she faced a penalty shot which Clarke converted into the bottom right corner for a 3-0 lead.
Michigan's starter Hala Silverstein made two saves in the first 45 minutes before senior Caylie McMahon took over in the fourth quarter. MSU had several corner attempts around the midpoint of the period and Carmen Pucheta was awarded a penalty stroke with just over three minutes remaining. However, McMahon saved it to keep MSU scoreless and finished with three saves in her 15 minutes of play.
The Spartans (4-4) will be idle until Sunday when they travel to Ball State.
