Senior Brooke Biermann recorded an 8-under par 64 in the final round, leading Michigan State's women's golf team to a second-place finish at the Mary Fossum Invitational. The event took place on Monday afternoon at Forest Akers West, East Lansing, Michigan.
Michigan State posted an 8-under par 280 in the final round and concluded the two-day, 54-hole tournament at 2-under par 862 (290-292-280). Ole Miss led from start to finish, winning with a tournament record of 17-under par 847 (274-289-284). Minnesota finished third at 8-over par 872, Florida was fourth at 10-over par 874, and Miami rounded out the top five teams with a score of 20-over par 884.
MSU Head Coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll commented on the team's performance: "It was a pretty exciting day for me being able to follow one of your players who shoots a personal best and 64 is a great number so a really fun day. Then watching the scores as everyone else on the team was playing well. Taylor (Kehoe) had a three under par, it was a good day, we beat some really good teams that we are happy to beat and just a springboard for what is coming up next which is the UNC tournament."
Senior Caitlyn Macnab of Ole Miss emerged as the individual champion with a score of 12-under par 204 (63-73-68), setting both tournament and Forest Akers West Course records in Sunday's first round with her score of nine-under-par.
Biermann started her final round on the fourth hole. She recorded birdies on five holes within six-hole span and ended her round with eight birdies total. Her score of eight-under-par tied for the second-best single-round score in MSU history and placed her second overall in individual standings at eleven-under-par.
Reflecting on her performance, Biermann said: "If you can imagine, it's pretty good. It was a pretty solid round, bogey free and birdies. I didn't start off too great. I missed three of the first four holes with my iron so I had to get up and down and work hard to get pars there. After that it was pretty smooth sailing and being confident."
Biermann was among three Spartans finishing in the top ten overall. Senior Katie Lu and junior Taylor Kehoe both tied for ninth place at two-over-par. Lu shot one-over-par in her final round while Kehoe recorded three-under-par.
Sophomore Ana Sofia Murciashot completed seven-over-par across all rounds while junior Paula Balanzategui finished tied for thirty-first place at eight-over-par.
Four other Spartans played individually; freshman Catalina Monroy tied for fifteenth place at four-over-par while senior Shannon Kennedy tied for fifty-fourth place at thirteen-over-par.
The Spartans will next compete starting Friday, October eleventh in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina during Tar Heel Invitational running through Sunday October thirteenth.
