Michigan State women's tennis faced a challenging start to their season at the pre-qualifiers of the ITA Women's All-American Championships in Cary, N.C.
The matches commenced on Saturday with junior Matilde Morias competing against Zuzanna Kubacha from Baylor. The contest was closely contested, with each player winning a set. Ultimately, Kubacha prevailed, defeating Morias 6-2, 5-7, 2-6.
Freshman Ellie Blackford made her debut for Michigan State during this event. She played against Sonya Macavei from Vanderbilt and secured a victory in straight sets, 7-6 (1), 6-3. This win allowed Blackford to advance to the second round of pre-qualifiers.
Liisa Vehviläinen concluded the day's matches by facing Kallista Liu from Maryland. Vehviläinen was defeated in two sets, with Liu winning 4-6, 1-6.
On Sunday morning, Blackford returned to compete against Salakthip Ounmang from Oklahoma. Despite a strong effort, Blackford lost the match with a final score of 4-6, 6-7 (4).
The Michigan State team will next participate in the Toledo Rocket Invitational in Toledo, Ohio.
