Michigan State hosts Mary Fossum Invitational featuring national and regional competitors

Michigan State's women's golf team is set to host the 38th edition of the Mary Fossum Invitational this weekend. This marks the second consecutive Invitational since its hiatus in 2019.

The Spartans will welcome 15 teams to their home course, Forest Akers West. The tournament begins on Sunday, Sept. 22 with 36 holes and an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, concluding with 18 holes on Monday, Sept. 23 at the same time.

The competition will take place on a par-72, 6,370-yard course at Forest Akers West, which hosted one of the six NCAA Regionals in May 2024. Michigan State tees off on the first hole alongside Florida and Ole Miss.

The lineup for Michigan State includes Paula Balanzategui, Ana Sofia Murcia, Brooke Biermann, Katie Lu, Taylor Kehoe, Catalina Monroy (IND), Shannon Kennedy (IND), Ella Weber (IND), and Amelie Weber (IND). Live stats will be available through Golfstat.

The field features nationally and regionally recognized programs including Delaware, Florida, FIU, Grand Valley State, Kennesaw State, Miami (FL), Michigan, Minnesota, Northern Illinois University (NIU), Notre Dame University (ND), Oakland University (OU), Ole Miss University (OMU), Purdue University (PU) and Toledo University.

Previously this month at the inaugural women's Folds of Honor Collegiate at American Dunes in Grand Haven on Sept. 11th., Michigan State finished tied for fourth place among fifteen teams. Senior Brooke Biermann was MSU’s top finisher tying for eleventh place with a score of four-over-par across three rounds.

Tournament notes highlight that two participating teams are coached by Michigan State alumni Emily Glaser from Florida and Caroline Powers-Ellis from Notre Dame. Additionally noted is Olivia Stoll from Grand Valley State being related to MSU coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll; this is their second consecutive tournament together.

Mary Fossum created MSU's women’s golf program in 1973 and coached it for twenty-five years winning multiple titles under her guidance until retiring in '97 succeeded by Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll who led them further success including thirteen wins overall in event history most recently finishing second last year behind Purdue while Katie Lu took individual honors scoring three-under-par across three rounds.
