EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State sixth-year graduate senior Jonathan Kim kicked a 37-yard field goal with one second remaining to lead the Spartans past Maryland, 27-24, Saturday at SECU Stadium.

Michigan State improved to 2-0 on the season as head coach Jonathan Smith won his Big Ten debut, while the Terrapins fell to 1-1.

The Spartans outgained the Terrapins, 493-339, led by standout offensive performances from freshman wide receiver Nick Marsh and sophomore quarterback Aidan Chiles.

Marsh had eight catches for 194 receiving yards, the 10th most by a Spartan in a single game and the second most by a true freshman, including a 77-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter that tied the game at 24 with 4:11 in the game.

Chiles was 24-of-39 passing for 363 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. The 363 passing yards were the eighth most by a Spartan quarterback in a single game.

Defensively, fifth-year senior captain linebacker Jordan Turner led MSU with seven tackles and two tackles for loss, while fellow linebackers Wayne Matthews III and Cal Haladay each had six stops.

Kim was 2-for-2 on field-goal attempts, including a 50-yarder as time expired in the first half.

Maryland opened the game with a 14-play, 75-yard scoring drive capped by a 15-yard TD grab by Tai Felton. The Terrapins were 4-for-4 on third-down conversions on the drive while scoring in 6:30.

The Spartans answered with a touchdown on their first drive, as Chiles found Foster in the end zone on a nine-yard slant with five minutes left in the first quarter.

Maryland regained the lead in the last minute of the first quarter, taking advantage of an interception thrown by Chiles. The Terrapins took over on MSU's 17-yard line and scored two plays later as quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. had a seven-yard rushing TD to make it 14-7.

The Spartans responded once again on their third drive, going seventy-five yards on eleven plays to tie the game early in the third quarter. Chiles hit Glover on a deep thirty-four yard pass for his first career TD reception.

MSU took over on its own twelve-yard line with just over two minutes left in the half but drove fifty-six yards on twelve plays to get into field-goal position. Kim drilled a fifty-yard field goal as time expired to give MSU a seventeen-to-fourteen lead going into halftime. Kim originally missed from fifty-five yards but received another chance due to an offsides penalty against Maryland.

Maryland capitalized on another interception thrown by Chiles early in the third quarter and tied the game at seventeen apiece with Jack Howes' forty-five yard field goal midway through the period.

The Terrapins took their third lead of the game at twenty-four-to-seventeen after Dylan Wade's twenty-eight yard TD catch at the start of the fourth quarter.

Howes missed a forty-one yard field goal that would have extended Maryland's lead late in regulation. On Michigan State's next play from scrimmage, Chiles connected with Marsh for seventy-seven yards to tie it up again at twenty-four-all with just over four minutes remaining.

The Spartans then forced Maryland into punting back possession which set up their final drive. MSU went sixty-five yards over thirteen plays culminating in Kim’s decisive thirty-seven yard field goal.

Maryland had one last chance but Haladay secured victory for MSU making game's final tackle after ensuing kickoff return attempt failed as clock expired.

Michigan State (2-0) will host Prairie View A&M next Saturday at Spartan Stadium scheduled for kick-off at half-past-three p.m., broadcasted live via Big Ten Network coverage.
