Michigan State secured a 3-1 victory over Vermont in its 2024 home opener, improving their record to 2-1. The Spartans had three different goal scorers and two assists from Emma O'Neill.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Spartans scored twice in the second frame. Skylar Santucci netted a goal at 20:42, followed by senior Jillian Bonczewski's goal off a corner play at 25:31.
In the third quarter, each team found the back of the net. MSU extended their lead to 3-0 with Carmen Pucheta's first goal as a Spartan on another corner play. Vermont's lone score came at 40:45 when Marie Dijkstra converted her second goal of the season after a pass ricocheted off a defender.
Lyra Gavino improved to 2-1 on the year with four saves, while Vermont's Ila Gunner also made four stops but allowed three goals. MSU had a slight edge in shots (10-9) and corners (6-2).
The Spartans will host Ohio on Sunday at 1 pm to complete their non-conference weekend.

* Santucci and Pucheta both scored their first goals of the season, with Pucheta marking her first as a Spartan.
* Emma O'Neill recorded two assists on Bonczewski's and Pucheta's goals.
* Ellie Wheatley and Brynn Shaffer each contributed an assist; it was Shaffer’s first point of the season and Wheatley's second.
