Here's a look at the week ahead (September 4-10) for Michigan State Athletics:
Volleyball
This week marks the home opener for Michigan State volleyball, as the Spartans battled against strong competition in Colorado last weekend, including securing a four-set win over a Colorado State team which was receiving votes in the national poll. MSU celebrates one of the pioneers of its program this weekend as it hosts the Kathy DeBoer Invitational presented by Auto-Owners Insurance. It's a great chance to see the Spartans in action as they play three games across three days.
Football
After an opening win over Florida Atlantic, Michigan State travels to Maryland in Week 2 to open Big Ten play. The game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network. The Spartans are 10-4 all-time against the Terrapins, including 6-3 since Maryland joined the Big Ten in 2014. MSU's defense had a strong performance in the opener with seven sacks, 10 tackles for loss and two interceptions. The seven sacks tied for the second most by any team in the FBS in Week 1.
Field Hockey
Coming off a pair of contests in California, Michigan State opens its home slate with home games against Vermont (Friday, 1 p.m.) and Ohio (Sunday, 1 p.m.) this week. The Spartans split a pair of one-goal contests last weekend against UC Davis (W, 4-3) and Cal (L, 2-1 OT). Maddie Lawlor and Bianca Pizano lead the Spartan attack with two goals each on the season.
Men's Golf
The Michigan State men's golf team opens the 2024-25 season as the host institution at the Folds of Honor Collegiate at American Dunes in Grand Haven, Michigan, next Monday-Wednesday. This is the third year for the tournament which benefits the non-profit organization of the same name that provides educational scholarships to spouses and children of military members who have fallen or been disabled while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
Women's Golf
This is the first year the women's golf team will play in the Folds of Honor Collegiate. It's their first tournament of what promises to be an exciting year for a program that just earned a No. 13 national ranking from Golf Channel.
Women's Soccer
The No. 5 Spartans put their undefeated mark on display in a pair of home contests. Thursday, MSU hosts Queens University of Charlotte at 7 p.m., followed by Loyola (Chicago) on Sunday at 1 p.m. These contests mark their final two non-conference games before Big Ten play begins next week.
Men's Soccer
Michigan State wraps up non-conference play with two games beginning Friday night at home vs. Air Force on Red Cedar Rowdies Night. Next Monday, MSU takes a short drive to play Oakland (7 p.m.). Goalkeeper Zac Kelly ranks third in the Big Ten with 11 saves.
