EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State head football coach Jonathan Smith has announced the team captains for the 2024 season.

The five captains—sophomore quarterback Aidan Chiles, redshirt junior running back Nate Carter, sixth-year graduate defensive lineman Maverick Hansen, sixth-year senior center Tanner Miller, and fifth-year senior linebacker Jordan Turner—were voted by their teammates.

"Proud to announce our captains for this season! It's a big-time honor, as voted on by their teammates, recognizing their hard work and impact on our team!" tweeted Jonathan Smith on August 19, 2024.

Chiles transferred to Michigan State in January following his freshman season at Oregon State. He was ranked the No. 8 overall player in the transfer portal by 247Sports.

Carter is in his second season in East Lansing after leading the team in rushing yards (798), carries (185), rushing touchdowns (4), and all-purpose yards (901) as a redshirt sophomore in 2023. A native of Rochester, New York, Carter spent three years at UConn (2020-22) before arriving at MSU in January 2023. He was named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List earlier this month and has also been nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and Allstate Wuerffel Trophy for his work in the community.

A four-year letterwinner, Hansen has played in 41 career games for the Spartans and is entering his sixth season wearing Green and White in 2024. He has earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar accolades four times and has already graduated with a degree in hospitality business.

Miller also transferred from Oregon State in January after playing in 40 career games for the Beavers. He earned second-team All-America honors last season from ESPN.com and was a first-team All-Pac-12 honoree by The Associated Press.

Turner spent four years at Wisconsin (2020-23) before arriving at MSU in January. He collected 135 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss (TFLs), five sacks, and three interceptions during his time with the Badgers, where he played in 30 games with 18 starts at inside linebacker.

Michigan State opens the 2024 season on Friday, Aug. 30 vs. Florida Atlantic at 7 p.m. in Spartan Stadium. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
