Michigan State women's soccer graduate student Justina Gaynor has been named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
Gaynor received the league's first defensive player of the week award for this season after scoring the game-winning goal in Michigan State's season-opening 2-1 victory against No. 15 Notre Dame. She started and played 77 minutes at center back. This win marked the Spartans' first triumph over the Fighting Irish since 1989 and their third overall in the 16-game series.
The Shelby Township, Michigan native earned her first Big Ten weekly honor and became the first Spartan to receive a defensive weekly award from the conference since Regan Dalton on October 10 last season.
Michigan State will host Arkansas in its home opener at DeMartin Stadium on Thursday, August 22 at 7 p.m., broadcasted on Big Ten Network.
