EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer commenced the 2024 season with its first training sessions on Tuesday, though inclement weather interrupted the morning practice.

MSU head coach Damon Rensing begins his 16th season leading the Spartans. Assistant coaches T.J. Kolba, Reid Friedrichs, and Nick Barry also return for the 2024 season.

"To me, it is always one of the most fun days of the year. It is always great to see all the guys," Rensing said. "Being around this for 26 years, you don't want to take anything for granted. For these young guys, this is their first time in an MSU practice jersey. It really reminds you of how special it is."

The Spartans will play two exhibition matches, starting on Monday, Aug. 12 against Butler at 6 p.m., followed by a match against UIC on Friday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m.

MSU returns three All-North Region players: midfielder Jonathan Stout (first team), goalkeeper Zac Kelly (second team), and defender Jeremy Sharp (third team).

Michigan State welcomes eight newcomers this season, including true freshmen Jake Grekowitz, Oscar Huerta, Mohamed Saad, and Jared Smid. The Spartans also welcome four transfers: Levin Gerhardt (CSUN), Michael Sly Jr. (Oakland), Shion Soga (South Florida), and Ryan Van De Winkle (Loyola Chicago).

"It was a good first day; obviously we have a ton to work on," Rensing added. "I really like this group. We have a lot that we have already worked on, and we have a lot of returners. We have a few young guys who have impressed us with some things as well."

MSU will face four teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last season: Big Ten foes Indiana and UCLA, along with Oregon State and SIUE. The Cougars are coached by former Michigan State assistant coach Cale Wassermann.
