The Michigan State football team officially commenced its preseason camp with the first practice on Tuesday morning under sunny skies and temperatures reaching the upper-70s in East Lansing, Michigan.
Following practice, MSU head coach Jonathan Smith, wide receiver Montorie Foster Jr., linebacker Cal Haladay, and defensive lineman Maverick Hansen addressed the media in the Williams Lobby inside the Tom Izzo Football Building.
"Great to get started – day one, as expected, but good energy, the guys were flying around pretty good," said Smith, who is in his first season as head coach of the Spartans. "Obviously we're just in helmets and spiders (light shoulder pads), but I was really pleased with what it looked like today."
The Spartans reported on Monday and held team meetings throughout the day before beginning practice on Tuesday.
"I thought it was crisp," Smith said. "You could tell we went through spring ball and they had a good summer. A lot of guys got bigger, faster and stronger. They are more comfortable in the scheme, and I thought that showed up in day one."
Michigan State is scheduled to return to the practice field on Wednesday morning.
The 2024 season opener is set for Friday, Aug. 30 against Florida Atlantic at 7 p.m. in Spartan Stadium.
