Michigan State rising senior women's golfer Brooke Biermann secured the 94th Missouri Women's Amateur title at Hickory Hills Country Club in Springfield, Mo., on Thursday evening. Biermann's victory marks her as the second Spartan to win a state amateur championship this season, following classmate Shannon Kennedy's triumph at the 109th Michigan Women's Amateur last week.
Biermann achieved a 5-under par 211 (73-68-70) to lead the field. She took command in the second round with a 4-under par 68 on Wednesday and concluded with a 2-under par 70 to clinch the win.
"Today, I just played steady golf," Biermann stated. "Both of the girls I was playing with were steady too, so I was just trying to stay patient out there. I was trying to focus on myself."
After starting the championship tied for fourth place at 1-over par 73, Biermann rebounded with her record-setting 68, which included five birdies, four of them on the back nine.
"Golf is a crazy game," Biermann remarked. "You never know when it's your time."
The victory grants Biermann an exemption into the U.S. Women's Amateur at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., scheduled for August 5-11.
"I am so excited to play in the U.S. Women's Amateur," Biermann said. "I've been to Southern Hills before and I have such good memories there, so I'm excited to go back."
Biermann will be joined by Kennedy at the U.S. Women's Amateur, representing Michigan State together.
"It's so great that I'm going to get the chance to share that experience with Shannon," Biermann commented. "I think it says a lot for our program that we've got amateur champions from two states playing in it and I hope we both can make a run at it."
