State representatives in Michigan have announced a bipartisan effort aimed at boosting nuclear energy generation in the state. The initiative, led by a group of legislators, seeks to position Michigan as a national leader in the nuclear energy field.

Representative Graham Filler highlighted the collaborative nature of the plan, stating, “We’re working together across party lines to make Michigan a national leader in all things nuclear energy.” The comprehensive proposal includes measures to pave the way for advanced nuclear reactors, establish educational grants, encourage innovation, and support workforce development in the nuclear energy sector.

Joey Andrews emphasized the commitment to clean energy leadership in Michigan, stating, “House Bills 4753 and 5906-5909 reflect our dedication to fostering innovation and securing a skilled workforce for our state’s nuclear energy sector. Together, we’re paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for all Michiganders.”

Samantha Steckloff underscored the importance of small modular reactors (SMRs) in transforming Michigan’s energy landscape, noting, “This technology represents an incredibly important component in our clean energy future, and this is our chance to position Michigan as a leader in this space.”

Mike McFall highlighted the benefits of diversifying energy production in the state, emphasizing the importance of reliable clean energy for residents and businesses. He stated, “Expansion of nuclear energy in Michigan will allow our state to be a leader in energy production while creating jobs and providing real energy solutions for our state.”

The plan also received support from Todd Allen, Chair of the Department of Nuclear Engineering & Radiological Sciences at the University of Michigan, who stressed the significance of embracing nuclear energy as part of the state’s energy portfolio. Allen noted, “With the new legislation, Michigan is taking a crucial step towards embracing nuclear energy as an integral part of its energy portfolio.”

The legislators believe that the new renewable energy standards in Michigan will benefit from nuclear energy generation, with the potential to create a more reliable power grid and attract a highly skilled workforce to the state. The reopening of the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in 2025 with the installation of SMRs is seen as a significant milestone in Michigan's path towards becoming a national leader in nuclear technology.

The bipartisan plan aims to not only advance nuclear energy technology in Michigan but also ensure the state's sustainable energy future while fostering innovation and economic growth.
