When you hear the tornado sirens on Wednesday - think about where you would go had it not been just a test!

And if you did not receive this email, make sure you are signed up for the free countywide alert system at http://tinyurl.com/capitalalerts

As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, the Lansing / Ingham County outdoor warning siren system (known widely as "tornado sirens") will be activated on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at 1:00 PM as part of the statewide tornado drill.

The Ingham County Emergency Management office encourages residents, workers, and visitors to use this time to take shelter (if you can safely do so) or to consider where you would go if an actual tornado warning had been issued where you are.REMEMBER: SIRENS ARE JUST ONE LAYER OF MULTIPLE SYSTEMS INTENDED TO ALERT YOU OF DANGER. They are NOT Intended to be heard indoors and should NOT be relied upon as your only source of alerts.

Ingham County follows national best practices with our siren system. Emergency alert sirens will sound for any of the following:

• Tornado Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS)• Extreme winds (80mph or higher) expected to enter the county or reported by spotters in the county• A reliable tornado report by trained weather spotters.

When an actual tornado warning is issued by the NWS, most phones will also alert thanks to the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system which is automatically part of your cellphone. That system will NOT be activated by the National Weather Service as part of this test, but we will send out an Everbridge alert as a reminder.

If you did not get this message sent to your email - make sure you are signed up for the county’s free alert system. That’s at http://tinyurl.com/capitalalerts
