U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, visited the #EastLansing Fire Department's Fire Station 1 today to tour the station and speak with ELFD's firefighters/paramedics and local media about the Fire Grants and Safety Act. This bipartisan legislation would extend federal programs that help support local fire departments across the country.
The bill would reauthorize the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant program, the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program and the United States Fire Administration, which are all set to expire in the coming years and are used by local fire departments to address staffing needs, purchase equipment, develop fire training and education programs and improve emergency medical services.
Sen. Peters was joined by East Lansing Mayor Ron Bacon at the event today, who had this to say:
“Sen. Peters’ continued support of first responders and fire stations in East Lansing and across the state demonstrates his commitment to protecting the health and safety of both our heroic first responders and the communities they serve. Congress must pass the Fire Grants and Safety Act to ensure vital resources reach fire stations like East Lansing Fire Station 1, and I am grateful to Sen. Peters for leading these efforts.”
