October 9 – 15, 2022 is #NationalFireSafetyWeek! The #EastLansing Fire Department will be sharing five days of activities this week to assist parents/guardians with teaching and practicing fire safety with their children! Today's activity covers smoke alarms:
SMOKE ALARMS IN THE HOME
Include your children while testing, installing or replacing smoke alarms. This will help remove the fear of loud noises when smoke alarms activate. Allow each child to activate an alarm during testing and discuss with them that an alarm means to get out and stay out!
1. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home including the basement.
2. It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms., so that one activated smoke alarm activates all smoke alarms.
3. Test all smoke alarms once a month.
4. Replace batteries twice a year or replace battery-operated smoke alarms with 10-year sealed lithium battery smoke alarms.
5. Replace smoke alarms 10 years after the manufacturing date, which is stamped on the back of each smoke alarm.
