CPS Recreation Millage Explained

Hinsdalesouthhighschool

Charlotte Public Schools issued the following announcement on Feb 8.

Superintendent Stewart explains the upcoming millage renewal

In my last article, I wanted you to be aware of our CPS Recreation Millage renewal, which is on the ballot for May 3rd, 2022.  This millage was originally introduced and supported 10 years ago, and it is up for renewal this year.  This is a renewal of an existing millage, with no change to current tax rates.  This does not raise our taxes, and would sustain the current rate for the next 7 years.  To expand further, I have added more FAQ’s, to help our community understand more about this upcoming vote.

While the overview of the CPS Recreation Millage was introduced before, and a detailed description is available on our Playground and Recreation Millage page we are releasing multiple articles covering different areas of the millage renewal.  This communication focuses on our Aquatic Center and the recreation programs we offer at Charlotte Public Schools.

Do people use the Aquatic Center?

About 49,000 individual swims are enjoyed by youth and adults at the pool each year.  Approximately 735 children learn to swim each year at the aquatic center through the participation in American Red Cross lessons.  Another 625 community members participate annually in non-aquatic recreation offered through the Charlotte Aquatic Center.  The main uses are for students to learn to swim, families/parent/baby classes, pre-school youngsters, and adults, disabled and injured individuals who need water therapy, seniors who are regular users, lap swimmers for daily exercise, Community rentals, and hosting the Special Olympics.

We have also started new Aquatic Events like: Glow Swim, Family Evenings, After School Swims 2x a week- food and transportation provided, Friday weekly school swims, and hosted activities (Party rentals, Daddy- Daughter Dances, Cardio classes (Water and Drumming), Swim meets, Holiday Camps, and Summer School events.

What other Recreation Programs are available at CPS?

Our Recreation Programming includes: Youth baseball, Youth basketball, Youth softball, Youth cheerleading, Youth track, Youth volleyball, Youth wrestling, Youth all sports camp, Kids Fit Games, Adult flag football, and Adult basketball.  We are introducing new programming that will include: Youth tennis, Adult tennis, Youth pickle ball, Adult pickle ball, and 3v3 basketball.  Stay tuned for early spring, when we release all of our new summer programming for exciting activities for our students!

As an additional reminder, this is a renewal of an existing millage, so there would be no change to current tax rates.  Charlotte Public Schools is expanding our programming with the goal of being the center of our community, for all ages.  Thank you for your continued support, and look for more information in mailers, articles, social media, and live/virtual town halls!

Go Orioles! Oriole Pride!
