City of East Lansing issued the following announcement on Dec 3.
Members of the community and media are advised that the East Lansing Fire Department (ELFD) will be conducting a live burn training this Sunday, Dec. 5 at 6350 Abbot Road in East Lansing.
ELFD has obtained permission from the property owners to perform this live burn training in a residential structure set to be removed from the property. ELFD has also obtained all necessary permissions from state and environmental agencies, and all preliminary and day-of safety measures have been or will be implemented for the controlled burn exercise.
“These types of trainings are extremely valuable for firefighters, especially those who are newer to the field, as it gives them hands-on training to hone their skills in effective firefighting techniques in a controlled environment,” said East Lansing Fire Chief Dawn Carson.
The training will begin at 8 a.m. with a walkthrough of the structure and setup. The live burn will follow, beginning at approximately 10 a.m. During the live burn, community members may see or smell smoke. The training is not open to the general public.
Members of the media who plan to attend are asked to contact ELFD Fire Inspector John Newman at (517) 643-5275 prior to arriving for parking instructions and additional information. ELFD extends its thanks to Home Depot for donating $250 in drywall for the training.
