City of Potterville issued the following announcement on Sept 29.
The City of Potterville Department of Public Works will be flushing hydrants October 17th – 22nd 2021 during the evening/early morning hours of 10:00 P.M. to 6:00 A.M.
Hydrant Flushing is an important preventive maintenance activity that verifies operation of public hydrants, and ensures adequate water flow is available should the need for firefighting arise. Flushing on a regular schedule also helps remove sediment that naturally accumulates in water pipes. Removing these materials by flushing maintains a high quality of water in the City’s water system.
When hydrant flushing occurs, you may notice slightly yellow, orange, or brown-colored water coming from your faucet. If this happens, simply run your cold water tap for three to five minutes. If the water is still discolored, wait about 30 minutes and run the water again. This temporary discoloration only affects the appearance of the water – it is not health or safety risk.
While the water is safe to drink, you should avoid washing laundry during scheduled flushing times. The flushed sediment from the water mains could discolor white clothing. Wait until the water runs clear at the tap, then wash a load of dark clothes first. You should also avoid using hot water until the cold water runs clear.
If you experience discoloration for a prolonged period of time, or if you experience a significant loss of water pressure, please contact the City Hall at manager@pottervillemi.org (517) 645-7642 or the City Water Department at dstanley@pottervillemi.org (517) 667-9524.
