City of East Lansing Provides Tips for Homeowners Ahead of Rain Events this Week

Storm

City of East Lansing issued the following announcement on Sept 21.

With rain expected in the forecast over the next couple days and Ingham County currently in a flood watch, the City of East Lansing is providing the following tips for homeowners to help prevent or reduce the chance for basement flooding.

  • Make sure gutters are clear of leaves, sticks and debris.
  • Make sure downspouts are connected properly.
  • Test sump pumps, back-up systems and backflow preventers (if applicable) to ensure they are working properly.
  • Make sure any private drains are working properly.
  • Remove valuable items from basements in case of flooding.
  • If a sewer backup occurs in a basement, homeowners should immediately discontinue household water use and contact the East Lansing Department of Public Works at (517) 337-9459 ext. 0 (during business hours) or (517) 351-4220, Option 1 (after hours).
For additional flood prevention tips, including projects homeowners may want to explore in the future, view this brochure from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
