City of Saline issued the following announcement on July 10.
There's a new face in the fire station! Jason Sperle took over the role of Fire Chief after Chief Hoeft took his last ride and retired. Let's get to meet Chief Sperle a little better!
Q: Where are you from and what is your background in working for fire departments?
A: I grew up in the area, went to Lincoln High School. I have family in the area, my whole family is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, my wife’s aunt owns Saline Flowerland, so even though I didn’t grow up a Saline Hornet, I knew the area very well.
I worked 22 years in Pittsfield Township, most recently as Fire Marshall, I also worked in Augusta Township at the same time.
Q: What were some of your highlights working at previous fire departments?
A: The hard thing about this is some of my highlights are someone’s worst day. I worked for many years as a lieutenant so we worked a lot of crashes. We may have worked really well as a team but we were called because someone was in trouble. I think the best part of working in this field is there is a lot of support of people in this job to go and do great things.
Q: What is your favorite part of working in a fire department?
A: Every day coming to work is something different and I love the job. It’s nice being able to do something you love. I love helping people, it’s the textbook answer. I like being in the community and being part of a team, the fire service gives you that team atmosphere like when you were in high school.
Q: What do you do when you’re not at work?
A: I have 2 daughters and they both keep me very busy with swim, gymnastics and dance and my wife is a cheer coach. I coached football up until last season and have stepped back from that; coaching has been a lot of fun but my family keeps me extra busy. My wife and I are those crazy swim parents now that my daughter has taken up a love for swimming.
Thanks for having me and I know I have big shoes to fill. I hope that I can continue to do great things.
Welcome to Chief Sperle and if you see him out in the community let's give him a warm Saline welcome!
