The Michigan GOP State Convention is scheduled to vote Saturday for its new chair, but despite withdrawing from the race a month ago, Laura Cox is now asking to be re-elected.
Ron Weiser has been the presumptive new chair pending the election and Cox sent an email on Thursday to Michigan Republican delegates attacking Weiser.
Conservative Intel reports that Cox’s email contended that Weiser served as the chair in 2018 and had made a secret deal with Secretary of State candidate Stan Grot to get out of the race. However, this issue has already been reviewed by former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Young, as well as other legal experts. All of the experts agreed that there were no violations.
“I find it highly ironic that Laura Cox put me in charge of the party finances and appointed me chairman of the Republican Party budget committee if she truly thought I shouldn’t have been hired. Laura Cox is desperate to hold on to her job and full of sour grapes. Shame on her. Shame,” Grot said, Conservative Intel reported.
The news media reports that Cox has been aware of the issue for several years and this is the first time she has brought it up.
Cox is refusing to exit quietly and is attempting to create division within the party, the news media notes. It contends that Cox’s attacks on Weiser are baseless.
Cox has struggled throughout her campaign for re-election to gain traction or secure endorsements, which is why she chose to end her re-election campaign a month ago.
Delegates are apparently rallying behind Weiser and his co-chair Meshawn Maddock.
“Michigan delegates are united and ready for battle in 2022,” Conservative Intel writes. “It’s time for Laura Cox to resign and work with the party, rather than attempt to burn it down on her way out the door.”
