Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, while banning outdoor gatherings of more than 25 people, attended President Joe Biden’s inauguration, where more than 2,000 people were present.

Whitmer tweeted a photo of herself at the event, which critics were quick to point out was hypocritical.

“Is this not the definition of non essential travel?” one user responded. “Hypocrisy is their creed.”

Another reminded Whitmer of all the small businesses suffering because of her executive orders.

“Glad you're enjoying your party,” the user replied. “We're sure the thousands of small businesses that have been permanently closed or crippled are ‘ready’ for some real leadership back home, and the opportunity to get back to work.”

Another user echoed the hypocrisy sentiment.

“If this isn’t the definition of hypocrisy I don’t know what is?” the user responded. “So we remain locked down businesses closing in your very state that you have had on restrictions for almost a year now yet you can attend this event? Where’s doing your part Michigander?? All about agenda for you(.)”

Jan. 20 saw Joe Biden being sworn in as the 46th president of the United States. Unlike other years, the inauguration was devoid of crowds. Instead, 200,000 American flags were planted on the National Mall to symbolize those who could not attend due to the pandemic.

Biden's swearing in signified the making of history in various ways, with Vice President Kamala Harris being sworn in as the first female, first black and first person of South Asian descent, to hold the office.
