The City of East Lansing cut 125 employees from its workforce, effective Apr. 13.
Most of the layoffs consist of workers in part-time and seasonal positions, such as those with parking enforcement and the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center, East Lansing Mayor Ruth Beier told WILX10.
Citing the COVID-19 outbreak and the shutdown of most local governments, Beier told the Lansing State Journal the city is expected to save $31,000 every two weeks in payroll expenditures by carrying out the layoffs.
According to the city, it has sent termination letters to affected employees. Beier hopes people will be able to return to their jobs once the pandemic begins to taper off.
The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention reported that Michigan registered over 41,000 cases of COVID-19 as of April 30, according to Michigan.gov. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has ordered Michiganders to stay home, except for essential trips, and she directed all public and private K-12 schools to cancel in-person classes.
