City of Lansing Public Service issued the following announcement on April 3.
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Lansing will be making temporary changes to the Capital Area Recycling & Trash (CART) and yard waste collection services.
Changes are as follows:
Yard Waste
Yard waste collection will be delayed to start two weeks after Governor Whitmer’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order is lifted.
For example, if the “Stay at Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order is lifted on April 13th, collection will start two weeks later on April 27th.
This two-week delay will provide time for seasonal employees to be hired and trained to start picking up yard waste.
Yard waste bags should not be placed at the curbside until the week of collection. If yard waste bags are already at the curbside, they must be moved.
The Public Service Department is currently looking into a yard waste drop-off option for Lansing residents. If this option is determined feasible, information will be provided.
Please note: Yard waste collection was originally scheduled to begin the week of April 13, 2020. This date will still be listed in the upcoming issue of Lansing Living magazine, which was printed before the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order.
Trash and Recycling
Trash bags, boxes, recyclable items and any other materials that are not inside of their carts will no longer be picked up beginning Monday, April 13, 2020. This also applies to CART customers with the 95-gallon cart option.
Simple Recycling (the orange bags for clothing, textiles and household goods) is temporarily suspended.
Bulk item collection (items over 30 pounds and longer than four feet in length) is temporarily suspended until further notice.
CART drivers are considered essential workers, as trash and recycling need to continue to be collected. The goal of the changes is to reduce the exposure risk for CART drivers from bags, boxes and other materials placed at the curbside. Status updates will be provided as available.
