City of Lansing issued the following announcement on March 23.
Mayor Andy Schor today submitted his third Executive Budget Recommendation for the City’s next fiscal year (July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021) that reflects the priorities of Lansing. The proposal includes continued strategic investment in strengthening neighborhoods and corridors, improving streets and sidewalks and fulfilling critical public safety needs, among other vital areas.
“This proposed budget reflects the priorities of the City of Lansing, which I have heard from residents, as well through our internal priority-based budgeting process,” said Mayor Schor. “The City of Lansing will continue to make key investments toward infrastructure, neighborhoods, corridors, small businesses and public safety efforts. We will also face financial challenges head-on to ensure that the City of Lansing is financially sound into the future.”
Mayor Schor’s FY 2021 proposed spending plan for the City is $229.1 million, a 1.4% increase from the FY 2020 adopted budget. The proposed General Fund budget for FY 2021 is $144.2 million, a 3.3% increase from the FY 2020 amended budget. Highlights of the proposal via the transmittal letter to City Council are attached, as is the full budget proposal.
As the local, state and national economy is changing daily due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this spending plan does not yet factor in new economic realities throughout the city. As a result, significant revision may happen during the budget adoption process and throughout the next year, in order to respond to the rapidly changing circumstances.
Schor said, “While, I am required by City Charter to propose a budget today, I recognize that our national economic realities are changing rapidly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I will work with City Council to update these projections for revenues and spending, as we adopt this budget by June and implement it over the next fiscal year.”
As per Charter requirements, Mayor Schor formally submitted his FY 2021 budget recommendation to the Lansing City Council on Monday, March 22, 2020. Mayor Schor noted that he is looking forward to working with City Council on their evaluation of his proposals. According to the City Charter, the Council has until May 18, 2020, to adopt a final city budget plan for the next fiscal year.
