As voters went to the polls for the Michigan primary races earlier this month, they also cast votes on a number of local tax questions.
According to unofficial results published in the Lansing State Journal, most local proposals passed, including:
Ingham Intermediate School District tax increase — passed 51,341 to 19,917
Ingham County health services tax — passed 56,348 to 16,681
Potter Park zoo millage — passed 54,440 to 19,993
Ingham County trails and parks funding — passed 55,027 to 19,439
East Lansing land sale — passed 6,811 to 3,008
CATA tax renewal — passed 42,338 to 16,484
Clinton County 911 tax — passed 12,297 to 6,090
Benton Township charter status — passed 518 to 268
Hamlin Township tax renewal — passed 577 to 139
Portland schools tax renewal — passed 1,737 to 494
In Williamstown Township, the road repairs measure failed by a very narrow margin of 1,187 to 1,179.
In the Ingham ISD, which asked voters to increase property taxes by 0.24 mills to raise $2.3 million annually for special education programs, the measure passed by a wide margin.
A mill equals $1 for every $1,000 of a property's assessed taxable value.
Ingham County voters also approved raising property taxes to pay for health services, as well as parks and trails.
On the health tax, county estimates show it would raise about $4.8 million in the first year, which will go toward services for lower income residents who don’t qualify for Medicaid or don’t have other insurance coverage. Voters also approved a five-year renewal of a 0.5-mill tax for trails and park programs, as well as a six-year renewal of a 0.5-mill tax that will go toward funding for Potter Park Zoo and Potter Park.
The Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) proposal received strong support from voters in Lansing, East Lansing, Lansing Township, Delhi Township and Meridian Township. The five-year renewal of a 3-mill property tax will go toward public transportation operating expenses.
