A bill that designates a stretch of Interstate 94 as Trooper Manuel H. Fields Memorial Highway has passed the Michigan House of Representatives.
House Bill 4572 was proposed by Rep. Sarah Lightner (R-Springport).
During a traffic stop on Aug. 27, 1994, on a westbound stretch of I-94, Fields was fatally struck by a vehicle that crossed the fog line. The vehicle collided with the trooper’s squad car and another vehicle on the side of the road.
“Our law enforcement personnel continually place themselves in danger on behalf of our citizens and state,” Lightner said in a statement. “Trooper Fields took an oath to serve his fellow residents and uphold the law. His commitment to that oath and the sacrifice he made in carrying out that duty must not be forgotten.”
Lightner has served the 65th District in the Michigan House since November 2018. The district includes portions of Jackson, Lenawee and Eaton counties.
The Michigan Memorial Highway Act, which became law in 2001, provides for the naming of highways and overpasses within the state. The bill now goes to the Senate for further consideration.
