Michigan State wrestling faced a challenging match against Maryland on Sunday at Jenison Field House, resulting in a 27-11 defeat. Despite the loss, several Spartans delivered notable performances.

Caleb Weiand, a redshirt freshman, began the dual strongly for Michigan State with a 5-1 decision over Maryland’s Tyler Garvin. This victory marked Weiand’s second dual win of the season.

Maryland dominated the next five bouts, gaining a significant lead with a team score of 17-3. However, Cesar Garza brought Michigan State back into contention at 174 pounds by defeating Branson John with an 11-6 decision. This win improved Garza’s dual record to 3-2.

Remy Cotton also contributed to Michigan State’s efforts with an impressive performance. Returning to the lineup on Sunday, Cotton secured a tech fall victory over Chase Mielnik with a score of 20-4. Cotton demonstrated control throughout the match and amassed over two minutes of riding time.

Despite these individual successes, Maryland maintained their advantage and concluded the event with a decisive victory over Michigan State.

The Spartans now hold an overall record of 2-3 in dual meets and are currently winless in Big Ten contests. They will face Buffalo in a non-conference dual on January 19.
